Safety isn’t expensive, it’s priceless.

Did you know that human behaviour contributes to around 80% of workplace accidents?

As we celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Health and Safety at Work Act (HASWA), it’s important to reflect on why behavioural safety remains a cultural priority for any business.

Behavioural safety focuses on identifying and addressing potentially ‘unsafe’ human behaviours that may result in accidents.

It’s about addressing habitual actions—behaviours that individuals might engage in unconsciously, without awareness of potential dangers.

Employees may engage in unsafe behaviour for various reasons, including time pressure, which leads them to cut corners to meet deadlines or boost productivity, and lack of awareness or understanding of the risks involved.

The goal is to build a culture of trust where employees feel empowered to take ownership of their own safety and know they are part of a team dedicated to mutual protection.

It’s not about blame. Behavioural safety is not just a set of rules—it’s an ongoing commitment at all levels, to the well-being of everyone in the organisation.

While I am not a health and safety expert, I have witnessed firsthand how a commitment to behavioural safety can transform a business’s culture and significantly reduce injuries.

Safety isn’t just a policy; it’s a shared value that shapes a thriving workplace.
