How motivation impacts employee behaviour.

With so much change and uncertainty affecting workplaces globally, it can be easy to forget that employees are at the heart of any organisation’s success.

And what your employees feel – about the company they work for, their leaders, their teams, and themselves – ultimately provides the fuel for high performance.

Our motivations drive our behaviour and our choices. Motivation at work affects where your people invest their time and energy.

As human beings, our behaviour is influenced by two types of motivation: intrinsic and extrinsic.

🔐Intrinsic (internal motivation), is based on personal rewards such as experiencing a sense of accomplishment, having pride in one’s work, or feeling creatively fulfilled.

🎰Extrinsic, (external motivation), in contrast, is based on rewards outside of us, such as money, status, or fear of punishment or failure.

The big difference between the two types is that -intrinsic motivation is not only sustainable, it’s FREE.

How do you create more intrinsic motivation?

1) Build connections with employees – get to know them as people.

2) Recognise and appreciate -show and tell employees how they make an impact at work.

3) Freedom and autonomy -give employees these to do their job well.

4) Involve employees -in decisions, team meetings, activities and setting their objectives.

5) Communicate often – use different methods to keep people informed and involved -team meetings, 1-2-1’s, town halls.

Every employee is different. What motives one, may demotivate another. Striking the right balance between intrinsic and extrinsic motivation will be the key to your business success.
