Nothing spoils a good story like the arrival of an eye witness.

When things go down at work, it can be tempting to jump into action mode, find the source of the problem and get things resolved quickly.

The trouble with this approach, is that we are in danger of jumping to the wrong conclusions, penalising people and damaging organisational culture and reputations. There is also the issue of legal risks which can be costly.

Workplace investigations are important processes which help to uncover all the pertinent information and evidence in relation to an alleged misdemeanour.

Making decisions in relation to a disciplinary or grievance issue without completing a reasonable investigation can mean that any subsequent decisions or actions taken may be unfair or unlawful, exposing the organisation and it’s people to the risk of legal action.

ACAS (Advisory, Conciliation and Arbitration Service) has produced an investigation report template that can be downloaded for free, and adapted for each organisation’s own requirements.

Getting your workplace investigations right is an essential element of your company’s commitment to workplace fairness and its zero-tolerance policy for conduct that demeans, diminishes or harms others.
