We are our own biggest obstacle – until we choose to be our greatest ally.

Have you ever found yourself in a tricky situation at work, only to realise you might have unintentionally sabotaged your own efforts?

I often speak with employees who, in trying to help or speak up for others, end up undermining their own position.

Whether it’s stepping in to support a colleague or voicing opinions in delicate situations, getting involved in the wrong way can backfire.

There are often more factors (and egos) at play than we realise, and by acting without considering the bigger picture, we risk creating tension or damaging relationships.

This kind of self-sabotage happens when we focus on the immediate need without thinking about how it may affect our long-term goals or workplace dynamics. We can inadvertently become a part of the problem, not the solution.

Before getting involved, assess whether your actions will truly help or create more issues. Sometimes, it’s better to step back, maintain neutrality, and focus on your own work rather than getting caught in other people’s conflicts.
